GLC TUTORING MODEL

The GLC model centers on a one-hour weekly tutorial with student, tutor, and optionally the student’s parent.*

*Younger students may benefit from a parent acting as a supporting teacher between weekly tutoring sessions, as in Suzuki music education.

Everything is designed to meet the needs of bright students, including selection of tutors, textbooks, and instruction style.

  • The tutor is mentor and subject master.  Typically he or she has a degree or advanced degree in the subject being taught – evidence of both acumen and passion for the subject.  See Teachers for Gifted Students.
All tutors have passed a criminal background check.

  • The pace of instruction is determined by student and tutor together.  The goal is to cover as much material as is comfortable for the student.  See discussion of pace and course sequences.  The challenge, depth, and pace are typically beyond what a regular school or homeschool parent can supply.

The student is responsible for outside-the-tutorial work / homework.

Analogy 1:  Piano Lessons

Learning piano means finding a teacher and arranging weekly lessons.  The teacher works one-on-one with the student who learns at his own pace, following talent and motivation – a model accepted around the world.

Young children may use the Suzuki variation, where a parent takes lessons with the child and becomes the at-home teacher between weekly lessons.

Analogy 2:  Tutoring at Oxford and Cambridge

Private tutoring is the distinctive feature of two of the world’s best and oldest universities – Oxford and Cambridge.  In addition to standard lectures all undergraduates attend weekly private hour-long tutorials with a faculty mentor.  Students prepare a weekly written essay, present it orally to the tutor, and discuss it.

Though demanding on faculty time and expensive for the universities, the tutorial is the heart of the superior education received at these universities.  “Person-to-person” instruction is credited with developing the highest levels of sound analysis, critical thinking, and self-directed study.

Tutoring Seasons / Semesters

GLC tutoring is offered any time of the year.

Students are encouraged, however, to follow the academic calendar, comparable to university semesters.

Location

Tutoring occurs in the student’s home or other venue arranged by the student (for example, his school or public library).

Assessing Progress

Narrative transcripts written by tutor

At the end of each semester the tutor will give the student and parent a narrative transcript of material covered and proficiency attained.

Standardized Exams

Where appropriate the tutor will help prepare the student for recognized standard exams, such as the Advanced Placement (AP) exams (for example, in calculus), or the Nation Latin/Greek test.

On AP exams see http://www.collegeboard.com/student/testing/ap/about.html

Cost

GLC tutoring is offered at competitive rates.  A minimum of six tutoring sessions may be arranged at one time, though students and their parents my cancel at any time if they are unsatisfied.
